HARMAN’s Studer Vista 8 Digital Console is a Winner by a Length with TVG

LOS ANGELES, California — Illustrating how HARMAN’s acclaimed Studer Vista 8 digital console can raise the bar for audio in any broadcast application, TVG, the official television and Interactive Wagering partner of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), has installed a new Vista 8 at its broadcast production and post production facilities in Los Angeles.

TVG provides live feeds, via cable and satellite distribution including the DISH Network and DirecTV, of all major thoroughbred races from all the leading race track venues in the U.S., as part of the online wagering activities of its parent company, the Betfair Group, the largest online betting organization in the world. The Studer Vista 8 console is the centerpiece of TVG’s strategy to move horseracing broadcasting into the high-definition era, bringing with it high-quality 5.1 surround audio, for programming such as “Trackside Live,” TVG’s flagship show.

“The Vista 8 will be our main console for all of our production and post-production,” states Frank Walters, TVG’s Manager of Engineering, who adds that the console will be fully commissioned in its facility this summer.

Walters, who says the network’s transition to HD should be complete by next year, was a champion of the Vista 8 from the moment he first sat down behind one. “In the end, all of the digital consoles out there can do many of the same tasks, but the difference with the Vista 8 is the sheer user-friendliness of the console,” he said. “I sat down with a console from one of the other leading broadcast manufacturers and I was lost for the first 20 minutes. I sat down at a Vista 8 and felt like an expert in five minutes, it’s just that simple to use.”

To Walters, that simply underscores what he and his mixers can accomplish with the Vista 8’s sophisticated capabilities. “We have as many as 10 live horse track feeds per hour and we’ll show one right after the other, with commentary from the track and our studios, as well as the ambient sound from the tracks,” he explains. “It’s a lot to manage, but the Vista 8 will make that job much easier.”

Walters cited features such as Studer’s patented Vistonics™ user interface, which provides unmatched analog console-like control and a clear, easily understandable display of all operating parameters along with fast, easy operation, and the surround sound management and mixdown facilities. “Features like that won over my senior audio mixer,” says Walters. “The Vista 8 is going to be a game-changer when it comes to horseracing on television. I’d say we made a very good bet.”

VIENNA, Austria – With 12 halls ranging in total seating capacity from 130 to 586, connected with outdated analog wireless capabilities, Atea Audio Visuell Kommunikation (AVK) of Sweden installed a complete digital HARMAN AKG DMS 700 wireless system in one of Sweden’s largest education facilities, Stockholm University.  Combining a long-time relationship between supplier Septon Electronic AB and Stockholm University and RF frequency shifts in Sweden, the upgraded solution was perfectly coordinated, timed and implemented for 2011 sessions.

Exclusively distributing HARMAN professional brands in Sweden, Septon and Atea installed a future-proof digital system that was easy to handle and offered stable transmission ability. Atea installed 48 channels of DMS 700 digital wireless, all networked through HARMAN Professional’s HiQnet System Architect™.

“The Stockholm University Support and Maintenance Department laid out the challenges clearly from the beginning: a future-proof, simple-to-use and logistically sound solution was vital to the university,” stated Sales Manager Stefan Eriksson, Atea.  “With the AKG DMS 700, we were able to provide the complete solution and the encryption possibilities added even more value, securing the wireless transmission within the halls.”

For speech reinforcement throughout the lecture rooms, the self-operated DPT 700 body packs were ideal for the professors in the halls, while the DHT 700 handheld transmitters were required for the reception desks throughout the university.

“The lecturers have adapted quickly and easily to their new digital world,” continued Eriksson.  “Any inherent fears of adapting to the new technology were quickly resolved and the school year has proceeded with little to no technical issues.”

HARMAN’s JBL VLA Line Arrays Deliver Powerful Performance in South Korea’s Daegu Stadium

Daegu Stadium in South Korea features a large-scale JBL VLA line array system.

ORLANDO, Florida – With a seating capacity of 66,000, Daegu Stadium is the largest stadium in South Korea. The stadium is striking in appearance, with a roof that combines design elements of traditional Korean houses with Teflon panels stretched across steel framing that provide protection from the elements while letting natural lighting into the stands.

Daegu Stadium has hosted major sporting events including the World Cup, and will be the site of the 2011 IAAF (International Association of Athletics Foundations) World Championships in Athletics. To prepare for the IAAF and other future events, the city of Daegu decided to upgrade the stadium’s audio facilities, which now includes a large-scale JBL Variable Line Array (VLA) Series loudspeaker installation with 18 line arrays in distributed clusters.

The sound system was designed by Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon and Williams (WJHW) of Dallas, Texas, and the installation was performed by Sovico Corporation of Seoul, South Korea.

The Daegu system employs JBL VLA901 and VLA601 line arrays. The VLA Series loudspeakers were chosen because of their ability to provide high-impact sound reinforcement at throw distances beyond the reach of traditional speaker designs. In Daegu Stadium, the distances between the seats and the speakers can be more than 160 feet. The VLA901 and VLA601 speakers are suspended above and in front of the seats from beams that are part of the roof’s support structure. Eighteen distributed clusters of VLA901 and VLA601 loudspeakers are located throughout the stadium, to cover the seating areas and other locations where sound reinforcement is required.

JBL VLA Series loudspeakers are specifically designed for permanent installation applications where even coverage, high intelligibility and very high sound-pressure levels are required. The VLA Series offers a modular approach that gives system designers the ability to build large line array systems for bigger venues, or design smaller line array systems for use as distributed clusters in arenas and domed stadiums, and larger performance spaces and houses of worship.

Panavid installed a new audio system featuring JBL loudspeakers at the Calvary Baptist Church in New York.

ORLANDO, Florida – Calvary Baptist Church was founded in New York City in 1847 as an independent Baptist church, and has been in its current location on Manhattan’s West 57th Street since 1931. Over the years, the church has undergone a series of renovations, and most recently completed a major upgrade to its audio system with the installation of HARMAN’s JBL VRX Series Constant Curvature, AE Series Compact and CBT loudspeakers.

Professional audio/video services company Panavid, Inc. of Pompton Plains, New Jersey was contracted to complete the rigging and speaker installation, led by Client Relations Manager Dennis Mitchell. The Calvary Baptist Church system is based around left/right arrays of five JBL

powered loudspeakers per side, and two VRX918S 18-inch subwoofers per side. Complementing the two main arrays are two JBL AC28/95 compact loudspeakers for front fill and eight JBL AC15 ultra-compact loudspeakers placed under the balcony. There are also two JBL CBT 100LA column speakers in the choir area. Walter Loehr of Panavid did the system tuning and configuration.

“Calvary Baptist Church reached the point where they needed to have professional audio for their sermons and all their events, up to and including concerts,” explained Mitchell. “The church has an exceptional choir and music ministry, led by Colin Fowler, and music is an integral part of the services.”

Mitchell noted, “The system was very much designed as a collaborative effort after numerous conversations with myself, Michael Toombs and Miq Munoz of the Calvary Baptist Church, and Jim Peters of rep firm Sigmet Corporation. Panavid recommended using JBL VRX932LAP loudspeakers with matching VRX918S subwoofers because they are some of the best sounding speakers available; we’ve been amazed at their sound quality.”

Calvary Baptist Audio Engineer, Miq Munoz, said, “The new JBL system punches right through to the back of the room. I used to describe our sanctuary as ‘muddy.’ Not anymore. And low frequency support from the subwoofers is powerful and tight.”

“We also needed speakers that were as unobtrusive as possible, while being able to deliver the large-scale sound quality we needed, and the form factors of the VRX932LAP and VRX918S allow us to do that,” Munoz added. “We used the AC28/95 and AC15 speakers where space considerations precluded the use of larger speakers. We also chose AKG HM1000 hanging microphones to mic the choir with exceptional results.”

“Before the system was even tweaked, we were excited about the quality of the sound the JBL’s were providing to the listening space,” Mitchell continued. “After Walter Loehr used his software, mics and ears to fine-tune the system to the church sanctuary, the sound became even more outstanding. The church is very happy with their decision to install this system and I am thrilled to see their excitement.”
