IBC Debut For HARMAN’s Studer Low-Cost Vista Digital Console and Compact Stagebox

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom – HARMAN’s Studer is extending its popular Vista 5 M2 range of digital broadcast and production consoles to include a 22-fader option, realising the lowest cost Vista ever to be made available and accompanying it with a new low-cost, Compact Stagebox.

Like its bigger brothers the 32 and 42 fader versions, the new model is optionally equipped with new TFT metering, capable of displaying signal levels from mono through to 5.1 channels on each input, with a configurable lower area which can be used to display bus assignments, surround images or the unique ‘History Mode’, where a scrolling audio waveform displays signal anomalies and highlights them for up to 50 seconds to allow the engineer to identify where the event occurred. Metering for ‘layer 2’ signals can also be viewed, while the Control Bay screen can be used to provide configurable user pages with up to 40 meters. When the TFT meter bridge is fitted, the external GC screen becomes an integral part of the chassis.

The Vista 5 family has found its home in all kinds of broadcast and theatre production facilities around the world. Existing Vista 5 owners will be pleased to learn that their console may be easily upgraded to the M2 version to be ready for the optional meter bridge, which is a simple add-on to the console chassis.

To provide a cost-effective package with the 22-fader console, Studer is also introducing the optional Compact Stagebox, which offers a high density of I/O connections in only 4U of rack space. The modular unit is fully configurable but is offered with a standard configuration of 32 mic/line inputs and 16 line outputs. Optionally, the Compact Stagebox can be equipped with an additional 16 mic/line input module instead of the output module, then providing 48 inputs. Alternatively, up to three output modules resulting in 48 outputs may be fitted.

The expansion slots for standard Studer D21m I/O cards may be used for interfaces connecting to most popular digital formats, including CobraNet® or Aviom A-Net® 16, Ethersound, ADAT, TDIF, SDI (SD/HD/3G), Dolby® E and Dolby Digital. A MADI recording interface can be fitted to the expansion slots as well.

The Compact Stagebox is connected to the host console using either Cat5 or optical-fibre MADI, the same way as the larger 64 mic/line Stagebox is hooked up, and shares the same redundant MADI cable capability. The unit comes complete with twin redundant power supplies, thermostatically-controlled fan cooling and full LED status monitoring. An 8ch GPIO interface is also provided.

TORONTO, Canada — In an effort to provide current and prospective students an opportunity for a head start in the mobile broadcasting industry, Toronto-based Humber College has invested in a mobile broadcasting truck, equipped with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1 digital console. Installed by Applied Electronics of Toronto, the Vi1-equipped truck provides students with intuitive, portable technology for mixing audio for broadcast.

Students interested in the highly demanding industry can now enroll in a 2-year Technical Broadcasting Videography program at Humber College. Every aspect of broadcast is covered in the coursework from traveling to events and setting up live feeds, to mixing and distributing the media.  The broadcast truck offers an easily transported classroom/studio on wheels.

“We saw a great opportunity to offer our students a program specifically designed for the mobile aspect of broadcasting, as it is a craft in high demand around the world,” said Michael Wright, broadcast manager, Humber College. “We take pride in our Soundcraft Vi1 and the fact that no other university or college program provides an actual state-of-the-art, high-definition, fully functional broadcasting truck to students.”

“The Humber College School of Media Studies’ HD mobile is a stepping stone for covering media, sporting and school events on campus and around Canada – all circumstances where digital consoles would be used in a real-time broadcasting situations,” continued Wright. “The students are impressed when they walk into the broadcast truck and see how much we’ve invested in their education.  The Vi1 is impressive in its capabilities and gives the mobile broadcast truck a great look.”

ORLANDO, Florida — Supporting the global audience tuned into the world’s premier business technology conference led by SAPPHIRE NOW and ASUG, the annual SAP Conference, held in Orlando, Florida, was mixed, monitored and distributed with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6 digital console. Utilizing MADI interface cards with Riedel RockNet connectivity, the Vi6 seamlessly distributed lecture, presentation and address audio throughout three studios and multiple lecture halls.

A Soundcraft Vi1 was also utilized as the main mixing board for the Conference’s Keynote Address. Syntonic Design Group, which is owned by Firehouse Productions, provided on-site audio services for the event. The Soundcraft consoles were supplied by Dave Zammit of Two Guys Audio.

The Vi6 was located in the broadcast studio of the Orange County Convention Center as a central hub for audio distribution. Inside the venue, thousands of attendees filled multiple lecture halls, as well as the 7,000-seat area, where larger sessions took place. Every presentation and lecture was distributed to the Vi6 for final monitoring and mixing before being sent to various locations across the globe for translation. The challenge, according to Syntonic Design Group, was to ensure every piece was perfectly interconnected for ease of distribution. With the Riedel RockNet integration, the system offered more flexibility and interoperability than ever before possible.

“This was quite a detailed project, where it was important to manage multiple sources to ensure our broadcast was perfect for the people attending the show and those around the world,” says Shelton Lindsay, consultant for Syntonic.  “The connectivity was quite remarkable and with the SAP Conference’s success, we earned valuable information about interconnecting consoles, which will give us a greater edge in future projects.”

“This was a large space that required thousands of feet of cable to perfect the transmissions,” states Donnie Smith, technical manager for the SAP Conference. “It was important to make sure we weren’t running three to four analog-to-digital-and-back-again transitions. The Vi6 made coordinating the event easy to monitor effectively. The console was the pivot point for the entire show.”

“Every piece of audio coming through the show was checked through the Vi6 and we were confident that all the content being distributed was of the highest quality,” Smith continues.

HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 SR Takes on All Competitors at World Gymnaestrada

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The 14th edition of the World Gymnaestrada recently concluded, drawing almost 20,000 participants from 55 nations, making it the world’s largest general gymnastics exhibition and the biggest sports event ever held in Lausanne, Switzerland. Event specialist Skynight SA of Geneva used HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 SR console to mix the opening ceremonies while simultaneously producing a feed for television networks.

The highly configurable Vista 5 SR console used a setup of 208 input channels on a small footprint of only 32 faders, thanks to its Vistonics™ user interface. This made the console the ideal choice for Martin Reich, who planned the audio installation with Skynight, and also manned the desk during the event with the help Riedel RockNet’s digital audio network.

“We decided to use the Vista 5 SR with Rocknet because it provided the greatest amount of flexibility right through to the end of the event,” Reich says. “One example is that after the opening ceremony some of the stages with live music were not used anymore. This system allowed us to simply remove the unused stageboxes without the need to reconfigure the network. Thanks to the good preparation and cooperation of all involved, the system was up and running within the shortest possible time, and it ran throughout the event without a glitch!”

In total, more then 180 audio sources coming from four different stages around the stadium had to be transported to the FOH position. Cable runs were long, with the connection from the west stage to the east stage running 300 meters. Thanks to the Rocknet system that makes use of either Cat5 or optical fiber links, heavy analog multicore cables were eliminated from the system design, and sources were plugged into one of the 12 Rocknet stageboxes and converted to the digital domain directly at the place where they originated. This was the first large-scale event where three Rocknet rings were connected to a Studer Vista console—and the success of this World Gymnaestrada is a result of the ongoing collaboration between Studer and Riedel.

A pair of Soundcraft Vi6 digital consoles was provided for the visiting sound engineers.

In the separate Dance Arena performance area, international artists such as Underworld, Deadmau5, Groove Armada and James Zabiela headed up an all-star cast. Here, the sound reinforcement system featured two hangs each of 24 VT4888 loudspeakers and VT4880 subwoofers, driven by a dbx DriveRack 4800 and Crown CTs3000 power amplifiers.
