NORTHRIDGE, California – Designed by Dallas, Texas-based consultants, Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams (WHJW) to fit the physically and acoustically demanding environment of Ohio State University’s Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom, a HARMAN JBL VerTec® line array system has been specified to serve events ranging from concerts, presentations, commencements, as well as outside events, including corporate meetings and weddings. The VerTec line arrays were judged to be an ideal solution for the space, meeting detailed specifications for a semi-portable and self-powered solution.

Installed by Zenith Systems of Bedford Heights, Ohio, the VerTec system was seamlessly integrated into the venue, according to Zenith’s Joe Ockuly.  “We’ve used JBL in previous large installations and have had very positive results,” Ockuly noted. “The system was easily rigged and tuned, and the University to was able to utilize the space immediately following our installation.”

The ballroom, measuring 200 by 100 feet, is capable of being divided into three sections. The new main left-right main speaker arrays include JBL VT4887ADP powered compact line array elements and VT4881ADP powered compact arrayable subwoofers, all equipped with JBL DrivePack® technology. The nine-box VT4887ADP arrays are supported by three subwoofers per side. The ceiling-mounted arrays are suspended from a single hanging point–designed to go up and down quickly to move the system outside if necessary.

“JBL has a wide range of powered line array elements and the price-to-feature ratio is always a positive selling point for our clients,” stated Brad Lundy, consultant for WJHW.  “The reliability of JBL loudspeaker technology, combined with the quality and versatility of the VerTec system, allowed us to provide a tremendous audio system for this space. The system turned out great and the client is very happy,” he said. “The VerTec line arrays are performing exactly as they were designed.”

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – Located in Surfside Beach, part of South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach resort area, the 950-seat Celebration Music Theatre opened earlier this year as a home to world-class live entertainment. The Theatre features the artist tribute show SUPERSTARZ! Live! with entertainers performing hits from Elvis, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Cher, Barbra Streisand and many other stars.

The Celebration Music Theatre occupies the site of a former live-performance venue, where the stage, video, lighting, wiring and other parts of the theatre have now been totally redone. All previous audio and video equipment has been removed to make room for a completely new installation that includes more than 30 HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® line arrays powered by Crown amplifiers.

Local installation specialist Commercial Audio, Inc. was contracted for the renovation, led by sales and marketing director Adam Hyman and owner Chad Johnson. The company installed 16 JBL VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements and VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers, along with two ASB6128 subwoofers, six AC28/95 and six AC16 ultra-compact loudspeakers. Crown I-Tech HD IT9000HD, XTi 4000 and CTs 1200 power amps drive the loudspeakers. A Soundcraft Vi1 64/24-input digital console handles both front of house and monitor mixing.

“I went with JBL and Crown because of my previous experience with both brands, their reliability and their broad product lineup that covers practically any professional installation situation,“ said Johnson. “The theater is more than twice as wide than it is deep, so I selected the VERTEC VT4886’s for their coverage pattern, which I was confident would work in such an unconventional room shape. I deployed the VT4886 speakers in arrays across the top left, center and right of the stage, which provided even coverage throughout the width of the room without any gaps in the distribution of sound to the audience.”

Johnson also placed the VT4883 subwoofers beneath each of the two center arrays, and an ASB6128 sub under each left and right stack. In addition, three AC16 speakers are placed on either side of the stage as front fills for the front rows of the theatre. The six JBL AC28/95 speakers are used as on-stage monitors, located at various points along the stage. “I had used the VERTEC VT8886 line arrays in previous projects, but not in a room that was wider than it was deep,” noted Johnson. “They work extremely well in the Celebration Music Theatre and we’re very happy with the results.”

In addition, the Soundcraft Vi1 console proved to be an ideal fit for a variety of reasons. “The Vi1 offers a ton of flexibility, as evidenced by the fact that it’s being used as both the FOH and monitor console at the Theatre,” Johnson added. “Also, the Vi1’s ability to recall ‘scenes’ was important, with the large number of different acts performing on some of the productions here.”

NORTHRIDGE, California – In the first fixed installation of HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® subcompact line arrays in Western Australia, Perth-based Vizcom Technologies recently integrated a VERTEC subcompact line array system at the 575-seat Heath Ledger Theatre in Perth. The Heath Ledger Theatre is part of the Theatre Centre of Western Australia, one of the defining architectural landmarks in Perth. The VERTEC system was sold through Jands, HARMAN’s Australian distributor.

The Heath Ledger Theatre is a traditional proscenium arch stage, measuring 12m wide and 9m high. The proscenium opening can be minimized with a false proscenium and borders. The stage measures 25m from wall-to-wall and 18m from the back wall to the front edge of the forestage. There are also additional wing spaces backstage due mostly to the lack of any manual flying system at the stage deck level.

The Heath Ledger Theatre’s main left/right FOH speaker arrays comprise the new JBL VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line arrays, complemented by JBL VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers on each side.

“These VERTEC line arrays were chosen over the system that was originally specified as in many ways, JBL out-performed it,” said Graham Piper, Technical Manager at the State Theatre Centre. “This was also a more cost-effective solution. The new system has performed better than a lot of people had expected it to; in fact, everyone who has heard agrees that it was a good choice. There’s been nothing but a positive response to the JBL VERTEC system.”

NORTHRIDGE, California – Caesars Atlantic City is one of the New Jersey shore’s most popular hotels, offering entertainment, gaming, dining, luxury accommodations and much more in a spectacular oceanfront location. Caesars’ newest attraction is the Boardwalk Beer Garden, a place to kick back and relax and enjoy a world-class selection of beers and microbrews, along with an ever-changing selection of live, recorded and DJ music.

Located right in the center of the Atlantic City action, the Boardwalk Beer Garden features a high-performance music system with several JBL PRX615M powered monitor loudspeakers. Aurora Sound and Light Design installed the system, under the direction of Ian Hoffer.

“We’re specialists in the design and implementation of nightlife systems, and the majority of our work is club installations,” noted Hoffer. “The indoor portion of the Boardwalk Beer Garden was the site of a former club and already had a traditional sound system in place, but when the owners (Dusk Management Group) decided to create the Boardwalk Beer Garden featuring an outdoor seating and performance area, they needed additional sound reinforcement.”

“The project requirements called for high-quality, powered, and most importantly, portable speakers,” Hoffer continued. “I suggested that we use JBL PRX615M monitors to be evenly spaced along the beer garden, which is a long rectangular area outside of Caesars.”

The PRX615M features a 15-inch Differential Drive™ dual-voice-coil woofer and neodymium compression driver mounted to a 90º by 50º horn, all driven by a built-in dual 500-watt (1,000 watts total) Crown® Audio amplifier.

“The PRX615M was ideal for this application,” Hoffer said. “It fit the size and sound coverage requirements, and since it’s self-powered, compact and weighs less than 50 pounds, the speakers are easy to move in and out. We also installed AC power and XLR audio receptacles next to each speaker to facilitate easy setup and takedown by the bar staff.”

“The speakers have performed great so far,” Hoffer concluded. “They’re easily portable, and durable, which was a primary consideration for this application, and most importantly, they sound fantastic.”
