LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The Event Cinema in Berlin’s Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz recently upgraded its sound system with HARMAN’s JBL 5742 ScreenArray(r) 4-way cinema loudspeakers, effectively raising its standards for audio quality. The Event Cinema at the Sony Center is the flagship cinema of the Cinestar chain, which has more than 500 screens in Europe.

The 5742 ScreenArray incorporates patented SSC(tm) Screen Spreading Compensation, which corrects for the high-frequency dispersion of a perforated movie screen when the speakers are placed behind the screen. The 5742′s Focused Coverage Technology provides an asymmetrical coverage pattern tilted 10 degrees downward from horizontal to deliver uniform coverage in every seat.

In addition, the JBL 5742 ScreenArray cinema loudspeaker features a 4-inch titanium high-frequency compression driver operating in conjunction with a patented Optimized Aperture waveguide for uniform frequency response over a large area. The 5742 has a quad midrange array of four 8-inch Differential Drive(r) cone midrange drivers and the low-frequency section features two 18-inch woofers. It also has a shallow profile to accommodate minimum behind the screen depth requirements, and a Flat Front Waveguide design for easy baffle wall installation.

The Event Cinema at the Sony Center features three 5742 loudspeakers behind the screen. To accommodate multiple needs, the cinema also features 12 SRX725F high-performance PA loudspeakers to create an immersive audio experience.

A total of 16 Crown I-Tech 5000 HD amplifiers power the system with a total capacity of 80 kW, of which two are for each front-end system (four amplifier channels), six SRX725F (one amplifier channel per speaker) and four for the sub-bass (one channel per sub-bass). The I-Tech 5000 HD amplifiers feature Omnidrive HD DSP processing to handle the signal processing for each individual loudspeaker, including crossover functions.

Hollywood Outdoor Movies Provides Unique Cinema Experience With HARMAN JBL Loudspeakers

Providing the greater Los Angeles area with a unique twist on the late night movie, Hollywood Outdoor Movies (HOM) relies on HARMAN JBL VRX loudspeakers to entertain thousands by displaying feature films on a giant portable outdoor movie screen. With audiences ranging in size from 1,300 to 2,500 people, HOM owner John J. Snyder is using his JBL VRX system to deliver high-impact sound for movie exhibitions throughout southern California.

From Exposition Park and La Cienega Park, to the Fashion Institute of Design and an area of Los Angeles known as “The Cornfields,” HOM arranges day-long events for families that include live music, games, food, costume contests and of course, a feature film on screens up to 100 feet wide.

“We focus on making each screening a large, family-friendly event, rather than just showing a movie for an hour and a half,” stated Snyder.  “We try to make it all about the activities and events, where the movie at the end of the night is the icing on the cake.”

The Hollywood-based firm has shown a variety of movies, including Walk the Line, Swingers, Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, Moulin Rouge, The Hangover, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Back to the Future, Wedding Crashers, Zombie Land, the Shining on Halloween night and the Princess Bride at La Cienega Park, which brought HOM’s largest crowd to date.

Providing equally stunning sound to match the visuals on the screen, Hollywood Outdoor Movies relies on its inventory of JBL VRX 932LAP Constant Curvature line arrays and VRX918SP powered subwoofers, in addition to VERTEC® VT4888 midsize line array elements and VT4880 fullsize arrayable subwoofers.

“The user-friendly and lightweight characteristics of the VRX line arrays allow us to maximize our time and quality during the setup process,” continued Snyder. “With the built-in signal processing and amplifiers, the speakers give us a happy medium between our smaller JBL EON portable loudspeakers and larger, longer-throw VERTEC line arrays. This enables us to easily entertain thousands of guests with plenty of audio coverage and distribution, even in large outdoor areas.”

Utilizing inflatable AIRSCREEN technology to provide the highest quality and safety for all outdoor screenings in any weather conditions, HOM can project a film on screens up to 100 feet wide and more than five stories tall, entertaining thousands of fans in a variety of venues including outdoor parking lots, civic parks and other locations.

“With outdoor audio as challenging as it is, the VRX’s provide the perfect solution,” Snyder continued.  “Many of our guests have raved about actually feeling the bass in the ground as they watch, which is exactly what we want at these feature film screenings.”

HARMAN Introduces New Low Cost JBL ScreenArray® 3730 3-Way Loudspeaker At CinemaCon 2011

Adding to its world-class line of ScreenArray® cinema loudspeaker systems, HARMAN’s JBL Professional brand is introducing the new 3730 3-way ScreenArray loudspeaker at CinemaCon 2011. The new 3730 is designed as a very cost-effective solution for small to medium size theaters, offering maximum output and optimal coverage and the patented technology found in all ScreenArray systems.

The 3730 ScreenArray system utilizes a single-driver, full-size midrange horn with a 165mm (6.5-inch) cone transducer, and JBL’s patented high-frequency horn with Screen Spreading Compensation (SSC™), a technology which automatically corrects the spread of high-frequency information through perforated screens, and which provides the ScreenArray system with an asymmetrical coverage pattern 10 degrees down from horizontal for uniform sound in every seat in stadium-type auditoriums.

“Our ScreenArray loudspeaker series has continued to set the standard for cinema systems and the new 3730 enables even more venues to take advantage of JBL’s unmatched performance,” noted Chuck Goodsell, Director of Cinema, JBL Professional. “The cost-effective 3730 further reinforces JBL Professional’s ability to provide scalable solutions across a spectrum of venue sizes and price points.”

The 3730 ScreenArray loudspeaker features a selectable bi-amp or fully passive switchable crossover and a high-frequency, polymer diaphragm, neodymium compression driver for maximum output. The low-frequency section has dual 380mm (15-inch) transducers with ribbon wire voice coils for low distortion and high efficiency.

Marcus Theatres, one of the top cinema chains in the United States, is dedicated to providing the ultimate cinema experience to moviegoers. The company’s patented UltraScreen® movie screen is more than three stories tall, with five times the square footage area of a typical screen. Marcus Theatres is equally committed to cinema sound, using HARMAN’s JBL ScreenArray® 5742 4-way and 5732 3-way ultra-high-power loudspeaker systems, and Crown I-Tech HD Series power amplifiers in its UltraScreen 3D and 2D theaters.

“The quality of the audio is as important as the image in providing moviegoers with a memorable cinema experience,” said Mark Collins, Director of Projection Technology for Marcus Theatres. “When customers go to the movies, they expect to be ‘wowed’ and enjoy powerful, immersive sound they can’t hear anywhere else. The JBL ScreenArray loudspeakers and Crown I-Tech HD amps have more then met our expectations, and the sound we’re getting in our theaters is absolutely spectacular.”

JBL has been awarded three U.S. patents for its ScreenArray technology, created to provide even coverage to every seat, along with wide dynamic range, extended frequency response, maximum power handling and inaudible levels of distortion. The JBL ScreenArray 5742 and 5732 incorporate patented SSC™ Screen Spreading Compensation, which corrects for the high-frequency dispersion of a perforated movie screen when the speakers are placed behind the screen. The 5742 and 5732’s Focused Coverage Technology provides an asymmetrical coverage pattern tilted 10 degrees downward from horizontal to deliver uniform coverage in every seat in either traditional or stadium seating auditoriums.

The JBL 5742 and 5732 both feature a 4-inch titanium high-frequency compression driver operating in conjunction with a patented Optimized Aperture waveguide for uniform frequency response over a large area. The 5742 has a quad midrange array of four 8-inch Differential Drive® cone midrange drivers and two 18-inch woofers, while the 5732 utilizes two 8-inch midrange units and two 15-inch woofers. The 5742 and 5732 can be quad- and tri-amplified, respectively. Both models are ideal for 3D movie theaters, thanks to their expansive sound and precise imaging that complements the 3D on-screen action. The loudspeakers have a shallow profile to accommodate minimum behind the screen depth requirements, and a Flat Front Waveguide design for easy baffle wall installation.

Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers feature a new user-inspired DSP engine co-developed with BSS called OMNIDRIVEHD. The new processing engine features Linear Phase FIR filters that offer unrivaled crossover performance for sonically pure tunings. The OMNIDRIVEHD processing engine also features an innovative new suite of limiters called LevelMAX™. Harman HiQnet™ System Architect ™ mirrors the typical browser navigation interface to provide professionals with a familiar interface to access a host of power configuration and control functions.
