HARMAN_EmmanuelBaptistENID, Oklahoma – Since its founding in the early 1980s, Emmanuel Baptist Church has grown into a strong congregation that hosts three worship services on Sundays alone and activities that serve a broad range of adults, youth, students and other groups in the community. The church was overdue for an A/V/L system renovation and turned to Springfield, Missouri integrator, Paragon 360 for an upgraded audio system featuring HARMAN’s Crown, BSS Audio and JBL components to meet the needs of its contemporary worship environment.

“This project was a full renovation with a major architectural redesign of the entire worship center. It involved new audio, acoustics, lighting, staging and video systems as well as new scenic elements custom designed for the church,” said Mark Coble, Audio/Acoustics Design and Commissioning specialist at Paragon 360. For this project, Coble and his design/build team needed to satisfy the requirements of three distinct groups: those attending traditional services with a choir; a more blended worship experience with praise singers and a band; and a modern, contemporary worship service.

Coble also noted that Emmanuel Baptist Church’s pastor likes to deliver passionate sermons and wanted to get his voice down to a whisper and still be heard by all the church’s congregants. “Before the update, he felt like he had to yell at times to get everyone to hear him.” In addition, Coble noted that the system had to be more than just a “house PA” – it needed to have the capabilities of a concert sound rig. “The church hosts touring artists and didn’t want to have to deal with them bringing in their own gear. They needed a system that would have a large input count and deliver the high SPL that is often required for these performances.”

Before undertaking the project, church officials had asked Coble specifically about JBL and Crown based on their previous positive experiences in other venues. “We of course were well familiar with the capabilities of HARMAN gear and have had a lot of success with it. Since this had to be a really dynamic PA, I knew that JBL VERTEC® line arrays and Crown amps would be the perfect fit for this application.”

Paragon 360 deployed eight VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements and a VT4883 dual-12-inch subcompact arrayable subwoofer in three main flown clusters each at the left, center and right of the auditorium. Two JBL STX828S subwoofers were placed in custom subwoofer enclosures located in the face of the stage and four AC28/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers serve as overhead monitors for the choir. Nine AC25 ultra-compact loudspeakers deliver under-balcony fill and four STX812M 12-inch stage monitors cover the pulpit/stage area.

Seven Crown I-Tech 12000HD amplifiers power the main line arrays and subwoofers. Two Crown DCi Series 4|600 amplifiers drive the under-balcony and monitor loudspeakers, with a DCi 2|600 amp handling the choir monitors. The amps and speakers are networked using a BSS BLU-160 Soundweb London Signal Processor with BLU link in conjunction with a BLU-BOB break-out box output expander.

“Once we knew that we were going with JBL VERTEC, the Crown I-Tech HD amps were a natural fit,” Coble stated. “We knew they would deliver the kind of horsepower the installation required and we wanted to take advantage of the amps’ built-in VERTEC factory presets to optimize the system.”

In addition to the new audio system, Coble and his crew also did a significant amount of work adding the necessary acoustical treatments to optimize the sound of the sanctuary.

“The rig sounds great and everyone is really happy with the performance,” Coble concluded. “We truly realized our goal of transforming the space for a new generation of churchgoers.”

NORTHRIDGE, California – Western Carolina University’s Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center hosts the University’s basketball and volleyball teams as well as a variety of special events and concerts. Although rich in tradition, WCU’s administrators recently recognized that older isn’t always better, calling on consulting firm Acoustical Design Group to help upgrade the sound system at the Ramsey Center with HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers.

Acoustical Design Group worked directly with WCU to come up with an ideal audio system for the Center, which was installed by Raleigh, North Carolina-based contractor Strategic Connections. “Right from the start, we were able to talk with the University about the best products for the new system,” said Ian Wolfe of Acoustical Design Group. “It was apparent the University had a preference for JBL loudspeakers, as did we.”

The system upgrade began with replacing the center cluster with JBL PD5212/95 loudspeakers in a 360-degree arrangement. “The PD5212/95 is ideal for this purpose because it delivers high output with excellent pattern control,” Wolfe said. “Because the University wanted to maintain this center cluster for its basketball and volleyball games, we used the existing framework and winching system.”

Because the center cluster is near the scoreboard above the middle of the court, supplemental PD5212/95 loudspeakers were added to fill in the acoustic shadow created by the scoreboard, along with several JBL AM7212 loudspeakers for additional downfill.

The system upgrade went beyond replacing the existing center cluster, however. “WCU wanted a system that would accommodate University-based activities such as convocations and conferences along with concerts by regional artists who previously had to bring in rental systems,” Wolfe noted.

Wolfe and his team decided on JBL VERTEC(r) VT4887A compact line array elements, along with a stack of six ASB6128 subwoofers. “This system does double duty-when it’s not used for concerts, it can be moved to a different location for sporting events,” Wolfe said. “We had Strategic Connections rig the speakers to a system of chain motors and cables that allow the staff to move them to the required location without having to bring in riggers.”

In addition to concerts, sporting events, and conferences, the Ramsey Activity Center hosts student orientations at the beginning of each school year. “For orientations, WCU places a stage on the floor to create a ‘mini auditorium.’ For this application, the full VERTEC system would be overkill, so two JBL CBT 100LA column speakers mounted right into the existing lighting truss provide adequate coverage for about 1,000 people,” Wolfe added.

To complete the installation, JBL Control 26CT in-ceiling speakers were placed throughout the concourse. “WCU wanted the ability to send an independent audio feed to this area for trade shows, banquets and other activities,” Wolfe said. “The concourse also overlooks the football stadium and, during games, some spectators are seated in the concourse area. The concourse loudspeakers provide stadium sound during those games.”

“We’re very happy with the sound as is WCU, and Strategic Connections did a great job in keeping everything within budget and installing everything exactly according to plan,” Wolfe concluded.

This past March WCU installed its newest Chancellor using the “RAC” as the location for the ceremony. The show consisted of a 60-piece orchestra, 30-voice choir, brass quintet, regimental drum recessional, podium mics, national anthem mic, and three wireless lapel microphones. This, to many at WCU, was the most important event to occur on campus in 17 years (since the last installation ceremony).  Ryan Fisher of WCU reported, “The arena sounded like a digital cinema soundtrack.  Everyone was thrilled and there were plenty of compliments. The system performed absolutely perfectly.”

NORTHRIDGE, California – Home to the 2-time defending Major League Baseball American League Champions Texas Rangers, the Rangers Ballpark at Arlington is known for its energetic and dedicated crowds. Fort Worth, Texas-based Electro Acoustics recently upgraded the stadium’s sound system with HARMAN’s JBL PD series loudspeakers.

With a 17-year-old audio system in the venue, Electro Acoustics was called on to set a higher standard for the stadium after the Rangers’ remarkable 2010 season. With crowds becoming more and more excited about the team and their run at a championship, it was important to match that intensity with powerful sound. Replacing the original canopy-mounted loudspeaker system with a top-of-the-line JBL loudspeaker system was and easy choice for the designers, integrators and the Rangers.

Electro Acoustics swapped out 27 of the original speakers for 32 JBL PD5125-WRX low-frequency loudspeakers and 16 PD743-WRX mid/high-frequency loudspeakers, surrounding the ballpark in strategic locations. Two AM7215/95-WRX 2-way loudspeakers provide sound behind home plate.

“We’ve had a great relationship with the Rangers throughout the years and they’ve come to rely on our exemplary service and dedication, while we’ve come to understand their needs as a place for entertainment,” stated Chris Jordan, President of Electro Acoustics. “There is a clear, substantially improved difference in sound throughout the ballpark with the JBL PD Series solution. The client is very pleased with the outcome.”

Receiving the assignment in January 2011, Jordan, working along with system designer Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc., had from mid-January to a week before Opening Day to design, install, test and perfect the stadium’s new audio system. Jordan quickly connected with JBL to custom-order the loudspeakers.

“JBL was very cooperative and extremely helpful with our small window and we were able to deliver a great system,” Jordan continued. “We try to maintain a reputation of completing our work on time and on budget, so finishing this large-scale installation in such a limited time frame only backed that reputation.  We thank all of those involved for such a great end product.”

Kordis Sound & Lighting upgraded the audio system at Bijou in Boston with a variety of JBL loudspeakers.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Kordis Sound & Lighting recently upgraded the audio system at Bijou, a high-end club in Boston, Massachusetts, with a variety of HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers, immediately transforming it into one of the most state-of-the-art clubs in the city. With two main floors of entertainment, Bijou wanted to create two different atmospheres for its customers. The top floor is a dance area with open spaces around the bar, drawing large crowds and partiers, while the bottom floor is a more relaxed, upscale lounge area, with various tables and couches for its guests.

The top floor system contains four HARMAN JBL Dance5 loudspeakers, two CBT4 loudspeakers, eight ASB7128 subwoofers, while the back room features four AC28/95 compact 2-way loudspeakers with two SRX718S subwoofers, with four Control 26C ceiling speakers in each of the two restrooms on the floor. The DJ booth includes JBL’s EON515XT portable PA speakers with a PRX718S powered subwoofer.

Powering the top floor system are two Crown CTs 1200 amplifiers, two CTs 3000, two MA-9000i, four MA-12000i, two XTi 2000 and XTi 1000 amplifiers, plus one Crown 180A amplifier. The whole system was processed with a BSS BLU-160 signal processor.

The bottom floor features six JBL AC28/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers, 12 AC18/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers, two AC28/95 compact 2-way loudspeakers, as well as four Control 26C loudspeakers for each of the two restrooms on the floor. There are also 16 JBL ASB6112 subwoofers distributed around the floor and ground area with an AC28/95 loudspeaker used for the DJ booth with a PRX718S subwoofer.

Powering the system on the lower level are six Crown XTi 2000, four XTi 6000, and an XTi 1000 amplifiers, and a 180A amplifier for the restroom.

When deciding on which loudspeakers would fit the environment, Greg Kordis of Kordis Sound & Lighting cited JBL’s ease of installation, sound quality and affordability.  “The Dance5’s have the nightclub levels that Bijou was looking for to turn it into a premier club,” Kordis said. “The ASB7128’s were chosen because they fit perfectly into the size of the cabinets that hide them, while still delivering quality sound. The horsepower on this system is like no other, it had the room bumping without even breaking a sweat.”

There were many challenges that arose during the installation. At first, there were difficulties with acoustics and having the sound trapped between walls and furniture. “We dealt with this by using an assortment of smaller, AC Series speakers rather than using a few larger ones. With low ceilings in a small space, this ended up working perfectly to create the atmosphere and feeling that Bijou wanted,” Kordis said.

“Bijou is very pleased with the new system, and they’re looking forward to a great future with JBL,” Kordis concluded. “The sound is excellent and keeps people dancing and partying all night long.”
