OpiumOpiumFRANKFURT, Germany – In the first European install of HARMAN’s JBL Professional Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers, systems integration firm Fokum recently installed a Marquis system at the Opium dance club in Barcelona. The system was sold through Earpro, JBL Professional’s official distributor for Spain and Portugal.

The Opium, a combination club-bar-restaurant, is considered one of the premier dance clubs in the world, located next to the premium ARTS Hotel and near the famous “Bareloneta” beach. Its location, innovative design and high talent level of its DJs makes it one of the most popular venues in the thriving Barcelona club scene.

Naturally, the sound reinforcement system at the Opium needed to be on the cutting edge, fulfilling the requirements of the resident DJs and top-level international touring DJs, as well as the club’s customers. The club needed a sound system with high output on the dance floor, with limited distortion and high intelligibility. While the system needed to be powerful, it also needed to avoid creating discomfort for the club-goers. To this end, the Marquis Dance Club Series was agreed upon as the best option.

Fokum installed four super tweeter MD1 loudspeakers at the Opium club, plus four MD2 bi-amplified high power loudspeakers, eight MD3 15-inch low-frequency loudspeakers, and four MD7 ultra-long excursion dual 18-inch subwoofers. Powering the system are Crown Macro-Tech i Series amplifiers (four Crown Macro-Tech 5000i and four Macro-Tech 9000i amps. Sound processing is managed through BSS London BLU 100.

“The Opium owners were asking for the top sound system on the market, so we immediately recommended the JBL Marquis Dance Series,” said Josep Maria Aldoma, Director and Founder of Fokum. “We set up a demo together with EARPRO and the owners of the Opium were absolutely delighted. The best news is that, since the Marquis system has been installed, we only received positive feedback on this application.“

The Marquis Dance Series features eight impressive models, designed to bring a new level of sonic excellence to dance club environments. The JBL Marquis Dance Club Series incorporates new driver configurations and enclosure designs to deliver powerful, immersive sound with exceptional clarity and fidelity even at higher volume levels.

“Honestly, as of today there is no other loudspeaker that even come close to
Marquis Dance Club Series,” Aldoma added. “Of course there are other solutions available, but a specific solution for dance clubs with such a high performance level—that is only available from JBL Professional.”

NORTHRIDGE, California – Continuing over five decades of worldwide success, selling more than 115 million records globally, American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond recently completed a successful tour with HARMAN’s JBL VTX Series line arrays, providing unprecedented clarity and power. The 3-month tour included five performances at Los Angeles’ renowned Greek Theatre where, 40 years ago, Neil Diamond recorded his hit live double album, Hot August Night.

For the tour, Red Hook, New York-based Firehouse Productions deployed 32 (16 per side) JBL VTX V25 fullsize arrayable loudspeakers for the main PA system, with 28 (14 per side) VERTEC® VT4889 fullsize line array loudspeakers for the wraparound side fill, 24 (12 per side) VT4889 loudspeakers for additional side coverage, 24 (12 per side) VT4888 midsize line array loudspeakers for the left and right rear corners, 12 VT4886 subcompact line array loudspeakers for the rear fill, a center cluster of eight VT4886 subcompact line array loudspeakers, eight VT4886 subcompact loudspeakers at the stage lip for the near field, six (three per side) VT4887 compact line array loudspeakers for side fill washes and 24 (12 per side) VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers.

A total of 96 Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers powered the system, while Firehouse Productions also provided a variety of AKG wireless microphones and dbx DriveRack® 4800 loudspeaker management processing.

The decision to tour with the new VTX series loudspeakers ultimately came after Diamond’s FOH Engineer Stan Miller and Monitor Engineer Bernie Becker heard a demo of the system earlier this year.

“There is a significant sonic improvement in the JBL VTX series,” Miller stated. “The high-end response of the loudspeakers is quite amazing. We are never close to pushing the system too hard, which is unique. The peaks in various venues are usually under 100dB, making it exciting yet comfortable. It is a very musical system.”

“There is so much headroom with the VTX series, the audio is much cleaner and more direct,” said Sam Helms, President of Sigmet Corporation, a HARMAN representative based in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. “Everything is running AES digital, completely from the mixer consoles to digital inputs on the Crown I-Tech 1200 HD amps, then to the components of the VTX loudspeakers. It gives us ultimate control and produces high-quality audio.”

Chris Russo, Systems Engineer at Firehouse, stated, “City to city, night to night, the VTX performed brilliantly. The system consistently delivered every detail of the mix to all the seats in the house.”

Diamond is a true professional and never stops honing his craft, according to Miller. “From the first show to the last show he is constantly evaluating everything, from song order to how the set flows,” he said. “We even discuss the music that plays while the audience is leaving the show—everything has to be perfect. VTX and the other HARMAN products give us the confidence to perform at our highest level. The support has also been amazing and it is one of the reasons we have remained so loyal to HARMAN.”

The crew involved with the Neil Diamond tour includes: Greg “Chico” Lopez, RF guru and assistant to Bernie Becker at the stage as well as the Crew Chief; Jonathan Melton, Miller’s right-hand man at FOH; Scott Lawhead, Stage Tech; John Drane, a Diamond tour veteran of many years and Chief System Tech; and Jeff Child and Tyler Clapp, sound crew members from Firehouse.

NORTHRIDGE, California – For some, music is an escape from reality. For others, it provides a road back to reality. For Gabriel The Gun, it’s been both. Co-founder of the ska-pop band No Doubt with star Gwen Stefani, Gabriel has been through his share of adventures. To tell his story, Gabriel relies on HARMAN’s JBL EON515XT portable PA loudspeakers while traveling to Los Angeles school districts with the hopes of steering students from the dangers of a lifestyle he was lucky to survive.

”We started touring with No Doubt in 1986 and I got into substance abuse in a big way,” Gabriel said. “It wasn’t until I was flat on my back in an ICU hooked up to all types of monitors and machines, that I knew I had to change my life. I thought of my own kids and how my actions reflected on them and vowed to get clean. I took a 3-year sabbatical and straightened out my life. At that point I started to think of young musicians and how I could turn my mistakes into their success. I knew my destiny was to make a change in the world—maybe just one kid at a time.”

Eventually, Gabriel founded a 10-piece reggae/ska band with a jazz and soul influence called the BackBeat Brawlers. Gabriel said, “I believe that music heals and my epiphany was to serve society as an artist. And let’s face it, we as humans are challenged daily by a multitude of bad situations and music helps people through hard times. The BackBeat Brawlers perform at inner city schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District. We play for the kids and then we get down to the business of the truth. At most clinics, artists discuss music theory, what scale to play within certain chords, but we talk about life on the road. And while we discuss substance abuse and the pitfalls of the addicted lifestyle, our main focus of discussion is on all the great things that music and the arts provide.”

Gabriel explained the need to have an audio system that is self-reliant and easy to travel with. “When looking for speakers that would fit our needs, I went right to JBL knowing their reputation for being the best,” he said. “The message we want to convey is one of positivity, creativity and the soul-enriching power of music. We needed speakers that were equal in sound to the strength of that message. The choice was a no-brainer. The logistics behind traveling with a 10-piece band are difficult, and the JBL EON515XT speakers make our new road life less complicated. They’re awesome sounding, easy to transport and the setup is a breeze.”

”I’m so excited by the change that we have created in schools and communities,” Gabriel concluded. “If we can inspire even one child’s dreams or goals, then we know we have done our job. It’s such a rewarding experience.”

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN Professional today announced that its JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ sound reinforcement system design software is now available to users as a public beta version. JBL HiQnet Performance Manager had been previously available to a closed group of 60 worldwide beta testers.

JBL HiQnet Performance Manager is a highly refined user interface that facilitates the design of touring and live performance venue sound reinforcement systems. Created especially for touring and theatrical sound engineering, Performance Manager is an application-specific iteration of the category-leading HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ configuration and control software application for professional-grade audio system integration.

“JBL HiQnet Performance Manager is a powerful tool that makes the design, setup and tuning of a JBL VERTEC loudspeaker system a lot faster and more efficient,” noted Adam Holladay, Market Manager, HARMAN System Development and Integration Group.

“The response from our beta testers has been extremely positive,” continued Holladay. “In venue after venue, JBL VERTEC system engineers have been able to achieve consistently higher levels of performance than before. They note that they are also able to set up a system more quickly, saving time and money. Now that we are making it available in a public beta version, many more users will have the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits of Performance Manager as a free download.”

The public beta version of Performance Manager is available at http://hiqnet.harmanpro.com. The beta version is functional except that users will need to apply for a license key in order to go online and access the online operate modes of certain system devices. An in-depth series of training videos can be viewed at http://hiqnet.harmanpro.com/training/. The full version of JBL HiQnet Performance Manager will be available in early 2012 at a suggested retail price of $399.

Winner of a 2011 PLASA Innovation Award and a finalist for the upcoming EMEA 2012 InAVation awards for which voting is currently open, JBL HiQnet Performance Manager provides a comprehensive, step-by-step workflow that directly corresponds to real-world system configuration, taking the workflow paradigm introduced in System Architect 2 to a higher level of functionality for any live performance audio application. It is fully integrated with JBL’s Line Array Calculator II loudspeaker configuration and acoustic modeling software.

The user begins by loading templates of the speaker arrays used in the system, and then runs Line Array Calculator II for each array as part of the initial sound design task of determining how many and which type of loudspeakers are required to cover a given venue. For each array, Performance Manager automatically loads the passive VERTEC or powered VERTEC DrivePack DPDA line array configuration into the main application workspace – the first of many automated design processes native to the software application. Loudspeakers can also be manually loaded into the templates if desired.

Once the user defines the required amplifier parameters for the passive loudspeakers within the arrays, Performance Manager automatically loads the correct number of Crown Audio VRACK or other user-determined amplifier racks into the audio system. The software then associates the amplifier outputs with the bandpass crossover inputs for the selected array and programs the amplifiers with the correct JBL preset data, as well as gain shading and JBL Line Array Control Panel equalization parameters that are determined in JBL’s Line Array Calculator II as part of the modeling process to optimize sound pressure level and frequency response over the defined audience geometry.

Representations of the bandpass inputs for each loudspeaker section are overlaid onto the arrays, enabling the user to easily visualize the array configuration, whether JBL DrivePack-powered or driven by external Crown power amplifiers.  Performance Manager software also significantly simplifies system-networking configuration – the user can simply drag and drop devices discovered on the network onto the pre-configured devices within the Performance Manager workspace to synchronize all addressing and parameter values.

In addition, the Performance Manager graphical interface provides embedded control panels for array calibration, time alignment and system EQ which utilize input section digital signal processing resources available in either Crown I-Tech HD power amplifiers or JBL DrivePack-powered loudspeakers with DPDA digital audio input modules. Input attenuation, equalization, delay settings and bandpass controls are all readily accessible directly within the main application workspace along with flexible grouping and comprehensive solo/mute functionality for system testing.

Once system tuning is complete, Performance Manager’s Show Mode display is optimized for the actual live performance, offering appropriate adjustment control ballistics for equalization and dedicated monitoring interfaces for levels, speaker loads, thermal conditions and AC power requirements. The workspace for all stages of Performance Manager’s workflow has a common design motif, with monitoring functions overlaid on top of the same loudspeaker bandpass representations within the workspace, making visualization easier and more consistent across various workflow screens.
