HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact Supports Leeds Community Trust

LEEDS, United Kingdom — HARMAN’s Soundcraft recently lent its support to the new Leeds LS14 Trust Event Hire enterprise in the north of England with a Soundcraft Si Compact 16-channel digital desk.

Established in 2009, LS14 Trust is a not-for-profit organisation, owned and led by the local Seacroft community of Leeds 14, with a vision of making the area a welcoming, vibrant and happy place.

Having already established a Digital Lounge—where people can use the internet for free, have meetings and get help with their CVs—the Trust has now gone a stage further, receiving funding to set up the LS14 Trust Event Hire.

“We have purchased equipment that is essential for any community event, including a marquee, silent generators, large van with tail lift, and state of the art PA System—as well as the Soundcraft digital sound desk,” said Development Manager Nicola Greenan.

The Soundcraft solution had been recommended by Greg McKay, Technical Manager of O2 Academy Leeds and Ms. Greenan’s partner. The Academy Music Group has had widespread experience of Soundcraft platforms and McKay himself said, “The Si Compact 16 is a great weapon in my sound engineering arsenal these days.”

The LS14 Trust is also linking with Leeds Met University to offer event management training for local people who see this as a potential career path, with all profits going back into the Trust to enable the continuation of community events, new projects and sustaining the Digital Lounge.

The LS14 Trust Event Hire was formally launched on November 23 with an event at the Powerlite Warehouse in Leeds.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – At InfoComm 2012, HARMAN’s Soundcraft(r) is showing its first release of the Soundcraft ViSi Remote iPad app, now available free of charge on the iTunes store, which enables a single iPad to control multiple consoles from the Soundcraft Si Compact range on a single wireless network.

The Soundcraft ViSi Remote app allows users to roam around a venue and not only adjust input channel levels and mutes, but also adjust aux send levels and matrix sends, and level and graphic EQ settings on bus outputs. The ViSi Remote app also allows Soundcraft Vi Series consoles (including Vi1, Vi2, Vi4 and Vi6) to be controlled (forthcoming desk software update required). A single ViSi Remote app can then control a network of mixed consoles from the Vi and Si Compact series, a feature not found on many comparative systems. Anyone can download the free app and get familiar with its operation, including Vi console users prior to the release of the console software upgrade.

The app uses HARMAN’s HiQnet(tm) architecture to connect the network of consoles to a wireless router, which communicates with the iPad.

For even more flexibility, multiple iPads may be used on the same network, even on the same console, so that individual artists can control their own monitor sends, for example.

HAMPDEN, Maine – In order to accommodate the new sound requirements at Calvary Apostolic Church’s temporary facility in Hampden, Maine, Sound Media Concepts has deployed HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact 32 and JBL Professional PRX portable PA loudspeakers for weekly Sunday services and Wednesday’s Bible study sessions.

The Calvary Apostolic Church, which was completely destroyed in a fire in 2011, wanted to upgrade its facility and bring it back to life. Currently, the church is in a semi-temporary building, however, “The Si Compact will give the church plenty of flexibility when it is time to move to the permanent building,” said Jason Mathews, Owner of Sound Media Concepts.

“We needed something that was compact enough to be portable and also extremely easy to use, but could be integrated into the new facility once it’s complete,” Mathews stated. “Ever since I demoed the Si3 when it was introduced, I fell in love with Soundcraft and the Si series. It is extremely user-friendly and the fact that Soundcraft now has an affordable compact digital console of this quality allows smaller congregations the opportunity to take advantage of the latest technology with the breathing room expand in the future.”

The ease of use of the Si Compact is another advantage for this small but growing church, as most of the time the operators are volunteers, Mathews explained.

“The sound is amazing!” Mathews added. “The Lexicon processors sound great, you really get a lot of quality software in the console for such a great price. The pre-amps and processing are smooth and don’t fight against you at all.”

The ability of the Si Compact to save the settings after each use has made life easier as different volunteers use the board each week. “The console allows for flexibility and to re-patch everything internally,” Mathews said. “It’s great that there is no need to mess around with other gear and all we need is the console, an analog snake and speakers and we’re good to go.” This allows the church to change the console layout if needed without having to worry about connection or cable issues.

“One of the great aspects of the system is that we coupled Soundcraft with JBL,” Mathews added. For audio reinforcement, the Church uses a pair of JBL PRX635 powered loudspeakers along with a pair of PRX618S-XLF subwoofers. For monitors, three PRX612M loudspeakers are being used as well.

The PRX635′s provide amazing quality, according to Mathews. “They have just blown me away. The mid and high’s are so smooth and I’m surprised at the low distortion. Outside of their great sound, I was attracted to the PRX line because they are designed to be portable but also have rigging points and can be permanently installed in the new facility. I’d put them up against anything else on the market.”

Mathews mentioned how sometimes some instruments can get lost get lost in heavy mix, however, with the Si Compact and JBL loudspeakers, it all sounds clean and he’s never had an issue. “It’s as if the Si Compact and JBL loudspeakers were designed for Calvary Apostolic Church’s modern worship style.”

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact Takes Giant Leap With V2

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom – HARMAN Soundcraft’s popular small-format (but big-hearted) digital console Si Compact has received a major upgrade with the V2 software release.

The new free upgrade provides more than 23 major new features, updates and enhancements; the first welcome addition being eight additional DSP channels expanding the Si Compact 16 and Si Compact 24 to 32 and 40 inputs to mix, respectively.

Of particular note is the new user configurable fader layers allowing input channels to be reassigned anywhere on either input layer and any bus master reassigned to either master layer. Now an engineer can put the inputs and returns where he or she most needs them, for example, having the main vocal or presenter always in position 1 on both input fader layers, or mixing aux and matrix masters on a single bus layer to reduce the number of layer changes.

Another particularly useful function introduced in V2 is D.O.G.S (Direct Output Gain Stabilisation). A common frustration for engineers is when two consoles (FOH and Monitors) share the same source such as a mic on stage; the mix balance on the second (slave) console can be overridden if the engineer at the master console changes the mic gain and in some environments this could also result in feedback in the slave system. Using a connection topology where the slave console is fed from a pre-fade direct output of the master, DOGS can compensate for the gain adjustment maintaining original system gain between mic in and direct out. One of the unique advantages of DOGS is since stabilisation occurs ‘locally’ in the master console only this component requires the DOGS system and all other equipment connected to the master can benefit from the feature.

Selective Copy & Paste is now implemented allowing all or part of a selected channel or bus to be copied and pasted elsewhere. This basic functionality is augmented with the ability to copy and paste individual bus or matrix mixes and copy/paste FX presets between Lexicon processors. Enhanced MIDI control allows snapshots to be recalled from any external devices capable of sending simple program change messages.

A new security mode prevents unauthorised access to key functions; as well as ‘total lockdown’ security can be tailored for different ‘operator access’ levels for example locking out house EQ and processing for guest engineers whilst allowing access for in-house operators.

Other enhancements include additional information displayed in the Function Focus window on the touch screen, improved matrix mix facilities, show file & folder management, better navigation, improved default settings, HPF settings, added EQ curve graphics and much more.

GUANGZHOU, China – Invited to guest lecture at CA001’s bi-annual audio training course, Advanced Communication Equipment (ACE), the largest distributor of HARMAN Professional equipment in China, brought an arsenal of HARMAN gear to help train participants on the latest in sound management.  Coming from all around China, participants traveled from Hangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Zhuhai, among other cities, to train and learn more about the advancements in digital audio, from theory to practical usage.

Focusing on mixing as the theory sessions took place, ACE introduced the physical structure and composition of HARMAN’s Soundcraft GB8 and MH2 analog mixers, explained the structure, function and development of Soundcraft’s Vi, Si and Si Compact digital audio mixers and explained, in great detail, the dynamics of processing equipment – EQ, filters, crossovers, noise gate, compressing, limiting expanding and levels – through BSS Audio BLU-160 digital processors.

For practical applications, participants were divided into five groups, all trained by an ACE technician with a Soundcraft Si Compact 24, BSS BLU-160 processor and AKG microphones.  Audio was played through a CD player, which distributed the signal through the BLU-LINK network and an four additional processors to achieve full signal control.

During operation training courses, participants were introduced to the Si Compact’s digital mixing DSP processing functions, input and output interfaces, distribution and other machine characteristics and capabilities.  With the analog mixer available in contrast, participants were able to pick up on the similarities and differences between digital and analog.

ACE also addressed concerns about the effects of interface wiring, offering in-depth explanations and hands-on demonstrations to enable participants to master basic operations.

Participants were thrilled with the event as there was a feeling of benefit and comfort surrounding the venue as the day progressed.  Members of the CA001 are now fully capable of selecting the correct digital mixer for any small to midsize situation, how to distinguish between DSP processing and utilizing the Si Compact audio mixer in live sound situations.  Enforcing the usability and simple-to-learn characteristics of the Si Compact, attendees were able to quickly learn the ins and outs of digital audio and are prepared to succeed in the live sound industry.
