Soundcraft_Si_Performer_2_AngleNEW YORK, New York – At the 135th AES convention in New York, HARMAN’s Soundcraft is hosting free training sessions for its Si Expression and Si Performer lines of digital consoles. The sessions are being held daily from October 18-20.

The educational sessions build on Soundcraft’s successful Mixing with Professionals (MwP) program and will be hosted by Katy Templeman-Holmes and Tom Der of Soundcraft. “The AES show offers an opportunity for professionals and beginners alike to familiarize themselves with our Si Expression and Si Performer consoles, whose popularity has created strong demand for training on these products,” Templeman-Holmes said. “Training is free and open to anyone wanting to learn, or to more advanced users looking for additional tips and tricks to get the most out of their Si consoles!”

Daily sessions are taking place at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM outside the HARMAN Truck on the AES show floor (Booth #T1). All AES attendees are welcome.

CS Audio Deploys HARMAN’s Soundcraft Consoles To Accompany British Tenor Alfie Boe On Tour

LONDON, England — CS Audio is currently servicing a sold-out national tour with British Tenor Alfie Boe and a full accompanying orchestra, deploying HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi and Si Compact consoles as the heart of the audio system.

Alfie Boe, one of Great Britain’s most famous tenors, recently starred in the role of Jean Valjean in the 25th Anniversary Concert of Les Mesérables at the O2 Arena in London. He has seen great success with the recent release of his album Alfie, which reached number six on the UK charts.

In order to cover all audio aspects of the tour, CS Audio is utilizing Soundcraft’s Vi4 or Vi6 to mix 64 channels of audio at the front of house position, with a Vi1 for monitor use and an Si Compact 24 used to sub-mix the choir.

“Soundcraft’s Vi consoles were our first choice as we feel they have the right combination of features,” stated Paul Hatt, MD of CS Audio and monitor engineer for Alfie Boe. “The intuitive layout, operation and most importantly the great sound quality approaches the best of analog while still offering all the benefits of a digital console.”

When looking for a compact desk to handle the choir mixing duties independently of the main console, “The Si Compact fulfilled perfectly all the aspects we were looking for while keeping a small and tidy side-of stage footprint,” Hatt added. “Having the combination of consoles can really provide us with diversity. When we are in theatres with only Alfie we are able to use the Vi1 and then the Vi4 if the Orchestra and Choir are added. It’s great to have a system where we have an existing show file which is compatible between all surfaces and we are able to expand it according to the venue and input count, all while maintaining the same sonic characteristics throughout.”

With a range of desks on the market, Hatt and CS Audio are confident that they made the right purchase. “We are impressed with everything, from the sound quality, color-coding, the quick access of menus and pages, the Vistonics, it really offers it all,” Hatt added. “Soundcraft is definitely the system for us.”

CS Audio has also been using the Vi consoles on a wide range of projects, including tours with rock bands Hard-Fi and The Soldiers, and upcoming tours with 10-piece a capella group Straight No Chaser and orchestral dates with classical crossover artist Hayley Westenra.

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom — Paul Gauguin Cruises operates the cruise ship m/s Paul Gauguin, which can accommodate 320 people for a week long luxury cruise experience through Tahiti, French Polynesia and the South Pacific. Since its maiden voyage in 1998, the Paul Gauguin has been the longest continually operating year-round cruise ship in the South Pacific. The audio system in the ship’s Grand Salon was recently upgraded with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si2 Digital Live Sound Console, which is designed for installations where space is at a premium yet where a full-featured console is required.

“The Grand Salon is one of the focal points of the Paul Gauguin,” notes Jean Jacques Canot of French Polynesia systems integrator Total Vidéo “It’s the ship’s entertainment venue, where the crew performs cabaret shows in addition to appearances by guest artists and musicians. On occasion, bands also play when they have dance events.”

“Before installing the Soundcraft Si2, the Grand Salon was outfitted with an analog console and a lot of external effects processors, compressors and equalizers,” Canot continued. “Everything had to be done manually. Nothing was automated. We needed to bring the system up to modern day standards, and the sound of the Salon’s audio system had to be improved.” In addition to the Soundcraft Si2 console, the Grand Salon system was upgraded with four JBL AC18/95 loudspeakers, installed in the stage ceiling as monitors.

“The Si2 provided big improvements in many ways. The stage manager and performers say their jobs are a lot easier now, thanks to the Si2’s ability to store scenes and instantly recall them,” says Canot. The Si2’s Virtual Si offline editor program lets users set up and manage complete shows offline, for later download to the console. “Also, we no longer need to deal with outboard effects racks, and their space, complexity and expense.”

“Everyone is also impressed with the sound of the system now, especially the incredible quality of the Si2’s built-in digital effects, and the ability to tailor the sound with the board’s EQ and compression. The crew and performers are really satisfied with the improvement in the sound. With its 64 mic inputs, 24 faders and logical layout of controls and display screens the Si2 can easily accommodate the show’s present and future requirements, and is a pleasure to use.”

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Series Gains More Inputs and Options

The management team for the Soundcraft Si and Si Compact Series, now having won 11 industry awards in the past two years (left to right): Richard Ayres, Product Manager; Matt Rowe, Hardware Engineering Manager; Chris Gomm, R&D Senior Manager.

ORLANDO, Florida — Launched just two years ago and already the winner of 10 industry awards, HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Series has received an upgrade, which provides more inputs on the Si1 and Si2 versions plus additional functionality and options across the range.

With the range now designated the ‘Si+’ Series, the Si1+ has 16 additional mic inputs fitted as standard bringing the number of onboard mic inputs to 48 and processing capacity of 72 inputs to mix; the extra 16 mic input module may be replaced by an 8-in/8-out module if required. The number of option card slots increases to four, and there is now a space for an optional second (redundant) PSU.

The Si2+ gains the 16 mic input module as standard (also swappable with the 8-in/8-out module), which extends the onboard mic input count to 64 with an input-to-mix capacity of 80.

All three models, including the Si3+, gain a word clock output connector, and all models can use the range of Si optional interface cards including MADI (optical or Cat5), AES/EBU, CobraNet® and Aviom A-Net™.

Eggs & Bulbs Adds Soundcraft Si Compact For Hyde Park UEFA Champions League Build Up

LONDON, United Kingdom – German sound engineer Martin Stoll has purchased a Soundcraft Si Compact 24 digital console to add to the growing inventory of his production company, Bavarian-based Eggs & Bulbs GmbH.

Already a Vi6 user, the experienced sound man has been involved with the Schule für Rundfunktechnik (School for Radio Technology), which was set up in Nuremburg, since as far back as 1985. Seven years later he formed Martin Stoll Audio Production, which was renamed Eggs & Bulbs in 1997, and is today based in nearby Fürth.

Having familiarized himself with digital mixing at an early stage he was seeking a platform “with everything on board — at a good price” specifically to run the UEFA Champions Festival 2011 at Speaker’s Corner in London’s Hyde Park — a week-long celebration of football leading up to the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley.

Needing a small-footprint surface with contemporary features his search led him through all the obvious candidates. But with a Soundcraft Vi1 already in Eggs & Bulbs’ inventory he chose an Si Compact 24 to handle the second performance stage in Hyde Park, while the company’s Soundcraft Vi1 was on duty at the main central stage. The sale was handled by Thomann Audio Professional.

The Si packs powerful digital mixing facilities along with Lexicon effects into a compact form factor. Features include 24 recallable mic pre amps plus four stereo returns with each input fully equipped with compressors, gates, parametric EQ, High Pass Filter and delay. Buses and output processing match the versatility of the inputs — all mix and matrix buses feature a compressor and parametric EQ and to complement the channel processing Si Compact offers four stereo Lexicon FX processors to provide a wealth of user adjustable parameters.

After its first outing Martin Stoll said he was very impressed with the desk. “The Si Compact 24 has the same sound characteristics as the Vi Series and we can use optical MADI with the Vi Stageboxes extremely economically — giving us a better performance at a highly competitive price,” he concludes.
