Jiangsu TV Station Adds HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6™ And Vi1™ Digital Consoles

NANJING, China — To meet its high standards of television production, Jiangsu TV recently invested in a brand new 8-channel and 4-channel HD EFP audio system. To work in conjunction with this purchase, the station also invested in HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 and Vi1 digital consoles to mix the in-house shows on the 8-channel and 4-channel systems, respectively.

The 8-channel audio system is configured through the Vi6 through two Soundcraft stageboxes and fiber wiring. The main functionality for this setup is for the popular “If You Are The One” dating show, which boasts the highest ratings of any variety show in the country.

“With our new Soundcraft consoles, our operations are more convenient and more flexible, helping us to achieve higher-quality programming and, we hope, even higher ratings,” stated Senior Sound Engineer Jingsong Shen, who also appreciated that the interface of Vi6 can be easily separated into different zones with different colors for different functions.

Advanced Communication Equipment, the largest HARMAN distributor in China, provided the Soundcraft consoles.  Two years ago, Jiangsu TV Station purchased a Studer Vista 8 and a Soundcraft Vi6 from ACE.  The leadership among the station was very pleased over the past two years with the performance of the Vista 8 and Vi6, so there was zero hesitation with the latest purchase, reinforcing Jiangsu TV’s confidence in Soundcraft and its reliability and quality.

WALNUT, California — Mt. San Antonio College, located in the city of Walnut, California, needed a console that could satisfy all of its audio needs around campus. In order to do so, Chris Rodriguez, Head Audio Engineer at the College, advised the school to purchase a pair of HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1 consoles and large stage boxes for respective uses in broadcast mixing and in the new Design Technology building, which is home to a 400-seat theater.

The first console, purchased for permanent use within the broadcast truck located on campus, is ideal for broadcast mixing and with the optical MADI card, can be synced in order to do splits with the other Vi1 console. The second console, housed in the new theater, is used for many of the performances in the theater, arts, music, and dance departments, along with graduations both on and off campus.

“I am aware that Studer is the broadcasting standard, however, with that being out of our price range, I looked for the next best thing,” stated Rodriguez. “The ‘bang for the buck’ was perfect with the Vi1. The console easily supports MADI, which is huge because it allows us to do everything using fiber, and connect the consoles. Other consoles I’ve seen in this price range do not have an easy solution for this.”

Sound quality also led Rodriguez to the Vi1. ”The first time I heard the console, I liked the way it sounded,” he said. “To sound as good as it does at that price is simply amazing. It responds well and works well with the large stage boxes, and all the functions are smooth and easy to manage. I can’t get everything I need while fitting in the budget with any other machine.”

The Soundcraft Vi1 consoles are the first step in what Rodriguez hopes will become a major upgrade to all HARMAN products for the College. “We hope to get everything together in order to integrate the system with HiQnet System Architect™. It will be a major upgrade to our whole system and we look forward to that in the future,” Rodriguez explained.

While using the consoles, especially in an education atmosphere where there are constantly events and performances taking place, Rodriguez explained how nice the digital aspect of the console helps on a day-to-day basis. “The ISO feature is also extremely helpful as it loads every time with the certain aspects pre-routed, always the same way. Whoever is using the system doesn’t have to worry about patching even when loading a new show, which is nice to know that it’s always ready to go.”

“I am extremely excited to explore all the options that are now available with both the Vi1 consoles. It is a small step in a long process of a complete upgrade which will help to benefit all departments of the college,” Rodriguez summed up.

Louder Than Love Upgrades With HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1 Console

Soundcraft, Louder Than Love

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Specializing in live audio for concert tours and corporate events, Stockholm, Sweden-based Louder Than Love AB has upgraded its live sound arsenal to include a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 console. Founded in 2007, Louder Than Love owner Jonas Skramstad has worked with numerous international artists and companies such as Volvo, SAAB, IBM, the National Hockey League, Coca Cola and Astra Zeneca.

Skramstad’s specialty is front of house mixing and he has worked on tours for a wide variety of Swedish artists including the Cardigans, Miss Li, A Camp, Laleh and Dundertåget, among others. His routine is split to approximately 50 percent live music tours and 50 percent corporate events. The majority of the time, he can be found freelancing for various production and rental companies. In addition, Skramstad regularly conducts a live audio seminar and workshop for SAE (School of Audio Engineering) Stockholm.

As Skramstad’s sound contracting projects became more diverse, he came to a point where a mixing console upgrade was necessary. “I’ve used various digital consoles from almost every manufacturer for the last 10 years, so I really knew what I was looking for,” he said.

After evaluating a number of competitors, Skramstad chose the Soundcraft Vi1 console, along with a stage box with 48 inputs and 24 outputs via optical cable. “Although I’ve only had the console for a short time, I am already impressed with its flexibility and superb audio quality,” continued Skramstad. “I’m touring with it, using almost 40 channels from the stage and running six stereo in-ear mixes back to all musicians on stage as well as two sidefill mixes. I’ve also hooked up a MacBook using Apple MainStage 2 to run four mixes of effects to the console and I’m looking to upgrade to a PCM Native as soon as possible.”

Skramstad also uses the Vi1 for another timesaving capability: “I’m recording all the live shows through an RME MADI Bridge and RME MADIface to either Logic Pro or Cubase. This allows me to do virtual sound checks when an artist or band does multiple dates. I can run the recorded tracks from a previous performance through the Vi1 to do the next show’s sound check, saving time instead of having the band do another sound check.”

“When I first got the Vi1, I was able to get around the console, hook up mics and start mixing a rehearsal in less than an hour.” Skramstad concluded, “The Vi1 has not only been meeting, but exceeding my expectations.”
