LAKELAND, Florida — The First Baptist Church at the Mall has a rich history of serving its parishioners ever since it was founded as the First Baptist Church of Lakeland in Florida in 1885. From its beginnings with 12 charter members worshipping in a 32-foot by 50-foot wooden frame structure, the Church has been steadily expanding to where it now stands on the site of a former mall (hence its name) and can accommodate almost 2,500 congregants. With growth came the need for a more capable live sound console: a HARMAN Studer Vista 5 M2, which the church uses for both front-of-house and monitor mixing.

“We simply outgrew our old console,” said Daniel Livingston, Program Technology Supervisor at the Church at the Mall. “We now have three services on Sundays alone, which along with our pastor can include a full choir, a praise band, recorded music and more. We reached a point where we needed to upgrade our audio facilities, and we wanted to make sure we acquired a console that was not only up to the task but could handle our future needs.”

“Input count was a major factor in choosing the Studer Vista 5 M2,” noted Livingston. “We need to accommodate more than 100 FOH and monitor inputs for a Sunday service—not only the pastor, choir and band but also pre-recorded music sources and effects sends and returns. The Vista 5 M2 was one of the few digital consoles we looked at that we could configure with the required number of inputs, and we went with 104 channels. Another important consideration was that we can upgrade the console in the future with even more inputs, DSP and other functionality if we need to—having a future-proof console is a big deal for a church like ours.”

Reliability and redundancy are also paramount, Livingston noted. “The console simply has to work. In addition to our own busy schedule of services and events, we regularly bring in national Christian artists like Christy Nockels, Tenth Avenue North and Avalon, so we need the console to be fully functional, 100 percent of the time,” he said. “The Vista 5 M2 has backup power supplies and redundancy and if there’s ever an issue, the console will identify the problem and you can correct it immediately. However, we haven’t had any problems. The Vista 5 M2 has been solid as a rock.”

In addition, the Vista 5 M2 is easy to use. “The Vistonics™ interface and the console’s meter bridge provide lots of information,” Livingston added. “Everything just seems to be right there when you need it, or else you can get to it quickly. Every knob has a label and with the console’s color coding there’s no guessing about what anything does.”

“The Vista 5 M2 sounds absolutely amazing,” Livingston said. “The preamps are incredible. The Vista 5 M2 sounds better than any analog or digital desk I’ve ever mixed on.”

“I have to point out that nowhere on this planet, with any company I’ve ever worked with, have I ever gotten better tech support than I have with the Studer people,” Livingston concluded. “I can call at 10 o’clock at night and someone will be there for me.”

HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 M2 Records Malaysian King’s Royal Banquet

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – During a ceremony steeped in royal tradition, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’azam Shah, 84, was recently installed as the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The event took place at the new Istana Negara (royal palace) in Kuala Lumpur and was followed by a formal banquet at the Malaysia New National Palace in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur. This was attended by members of the Rulers, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Cabinet ministers, foreign ambassadors and senior government officials. Also present was a HARMAN Studer Vista 5 M2, supplied by Mahajak Trio, the territorial distributor, which recorded the occasion.

The program was sent to air nationwide on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), with a total of 32 microphone channels used throughout the night. The Vista 5 M2 console was selected for its innovative qualities, flexibility, ease of use, the precise meter bridge (displaying every status the sound engineer needed to see), user-friendliness of the Vistonics(tm) screen – and finally the fact that the console is aesthetically very attractive.

“The Vista 5 M2 enabled the sound engineers to implement fast copy-paste of all the parameters while the Vistonics interface provided immediate access to parameters by opening up settings onto the encoder, such as EQ, Dynamic, VCA and channel setting, without wasting time searching for any hidden buttons,” said Mahajak Trio’s Senior Manager Sales & Project, Lee Chin Kah.

Another key feature used to mix the event was ‘Master Contributions’, enabling the sound team to view and control all the contributions on Vistonics faders.

In addition to these powerful and unique features, Mr. Lee highlighted the instant recognition provided by the console’s use of color and icons for different control parameters. “The desk is extremely intuitive and easy to learn within a second,” he said. “This allows the user to focus on the creativity of his work.”

The cues were used to upmix the stereo transmitted signal to a 5.1 channel signal, and the professional broadcast contributed substantially to the event’s success.

Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’azam Shah had been appointed on December 13 last year to succeed Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu, whose 5-year term as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong had ended.

REGENSDORF, Switzerland – HARMAN’s Studer today announced the introduction of Loudness Metering for all Vista consoles. This is a result of collaboration with RTW of Koeln, Germany, who is providing a special version of the TM7 touchscreen meter to be built into the meter bridge of Vista 9 and Vista 5 M2 consoles. The TM7 meter was chosen as it perfectly complements Vistonics™, the simple and elegant touchscreen user interface that Vista customers know and love.

The TM7 meter will include custom meter presets which provides not only Loudness Metering to EBU R 128 and ITU BS1770 but also traditional bar graph and moving needle metering to many international standards. This Loudness Meter may be retrofitted to all Vista 9 consoles.

Bruno Hochstrasser, Studer General Manager said, “This is a new chapter in our excellent relationship with RTW who has provided traditional meters to Studer for many years. The integration with our Vista range will provide our customers with integrated and easy capability to comply with new regulations and to improve their services.”

The Vista family can be seen this week at CABSAT at Hall Sheikh Saeed 3, Stand Number S3-6.

UK Debut For HARMAN’s Studer Low-Cost Vista Digital Console and Compact Stagebox

LONDON, United Kingdom — HARMAN’s Studer has extended its popular Vista 5 M2 range of digital broadcast and production consoles to include a 22-fader option, realising the lowest cost Vista ever to be made available and accompanying it with a new low-cost, Compact Stagebox.

Like its bigger brothers the 32 and 42 fader versions, the new model is optionally equipped with new TFT metering, capable of displaying signal levels from mono through to 5.1 channels on each input, with a configurable lower area which can be used to display bus assignments, surround images or the unique ‘History Mode’, where a scrolling audio waveform displays signal anomalies and highlights them for up to 50 seconds to allow the engineer to identify where the event occurred. Metering for ‘layer 2’ signals can also be viewed, while the Control Bay screen can be used to provide configurable user pages with up to 40 meters. When the TFT meter bridge is fitted, the external GC screen becomes an integral part of the chassis.

The Vista 5 family has found its home in all kinds of broadcast and theatre production facilities around the world. Existing Vista 5 owners will be pleased to learn that their console may be easily upgraded to the M2 version to be ready for the optional meter bridge, which is a simple add-on to the console chassis.

To provide a cost-effective package with the 22-fader console, Studer has also introduced the optional Compact Stagebox, which offers a high density of I/O connections in only 4U of rack space. The modular unit is fully configurable but is offered with a standard configuration of 32 mic/line inputs and 16 line outputs. Optionally, the Compact Stagebox can be equipped with an additional 16 mic/line input module instead of the output module, then providing 48 inputs. Alternatively, up to three output modules resulting in 48 outputs may be fitted.

The expansion slots for standard Studer D21m I/O cards may be used for interfaces connecting to most popular digital formats, including CobraNet® or Aviom A-Net® 16, Ethersound, ADAT, TDIF, SDI (SD/HD/3G), Dolby® E and Dolby Digital. A MADI recording interface can be fitted to the expansion slots as well.

The Compact Stagebox is connected to the host console using either Cat5 or optical-fibre MADI, the same way as the larger 64 mic/line Stagebox is hooked up, and shares the same redundant MADI cable capability. The unit comes complete with twin redundant power supplies, thermostatically-controlled fan cooling and full LED status monitoring. An 8ch GPIO interface is also provided.

HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5™ M2 Makes French Debut at Paris Hippodrome

PARIS, France – The 35,000-capacity Hippodrome de Paris-Vincennes, which over the years has been as well known for hosting rock concerts as for its main purpose of horse racing, has recently upgraded its production infrastructure.

One of the steps taken by the technical department was to replace its old analogue mixing console with a Studer Vista 5 M2 digital desk, configured with 32 mic/line inputs, 72 line out and eight AES I/O. This was the first sale of the new console in France (and one of the first to be shipped anywhere in the world).

The large venue, with its 3000 sq metre Grand Hall, is a world famous venue for trotting events, with the jockeys pulling a two-wheel cart known as a ‘sulky’. The main track itself measures 2km in length (whereas it is generally only 800m or 1600m in other horse racing arenas).

It is to these meetings, which include the famous ‘Prix d’Amerique’, that the control room itself is dedicated, while the races themselves are displayed on a 100 sq. metre large external screen, one of the largest in Europe.

The venue’s management company SECF (Société d’Encouragement du Cheval Français), contacted Jean-Philippe Blanchard, Broadcast Division Director at Audiopole, the French Studer distributor, with whom they have a long association.

“They were looking for an upgrade to mix the ambient sounds and commentaries within the amphitheatre, both for live playback and broadcast purposes,” stated M. Blanchard.

“The operators were impressed by the quick and easy operation of the Vistonics screen, which gives them instant control over all the channel functions, and by the new metering, which will give them better control of all incoming signals. They also noticed that engineers are able to work for hours at a time on the console without getting tired.”

Installation of the new Vista 5 M2 took place during the month of August when the venue was closed. Its arrival marks the start of a new era of broadcast coverage for a venue that dates back to 1879 — when it was originally built.
