Farber Sound upgraded the sound reinforcement system at the Paramount Theatre in St. Cloud, Minnesota with JBL VRX Constant Curvature loudspeakers and a Soundcraft Si3 digital console.

ST. CLOUD, Minnesota – Located in the historic downtown district of St. Cloud, Minnesota, the Paramount Theatre is a city-owned cornerstone of the community, serving as a stage for rent by community groups and for professional performances by touring musicians and theatrical groups. When the time came for a new audio system, the Paramount Theatre called on Minneapolis-based Farber Sound, which designed and installed a house PA system containing HARMAN’s JBL VRX Constant Curvature arrays, with a Soundcraft Si3 digital console at the front-of-house position.

According to Dave Farber, Owner of Farber Sound, the project was the result of a longstanding relationship between his company and the Paramount Theatre. “For the past 10 years we have been the theater’s production company whenever they needed a rental system, whether it was just stage monitors or if the artists wanted something beyond the house PA system,” Farber said.

Over time, Farber began to discuss the prospect of replacing the house PA system with an updated, cost-effective solution. For one event at the Paramount, Farber Sound deployed JBL VRX loudspeakers, which left an impression on Chuck Norwood, the Paramount Theater’s Technical Director. “The people I work with at the Theatre were very impressed and it really left a memory with them about how the VRX system would sound if it could fit the theater’s budget and space,” Farber said. “We installed the system and it’s been working fabulously.”

The system includes line arrays of four VRX932LA-1 loudspeakers per side, with one VRX918S subwoofer per side. Six AC16 loudspeakers provide front fill, along with two SRX728S subwoofers that can be utilized for additional subwoofer reinforcement when necessary.

As one of the region’s leading professional audio service companies, Farber Sound’s comfort level with the VRX line arrays is derived in part from its experience as a JBL VERTEC® line array system owner, as the company deploys its VERTEC system for a variety of live sound events.

“The VRX system was perfect in terms of size and cost,” Farber said. “The balcony is not very deep and the throw is not very far, so the Constant Curvature line array design accommodated the layout of the room. We felt that with the types of productions the theater hosts, this system would really fit any scenario.”

The Soundcraft Si3 digital audio console was selected for its combination of versatility and sound quality. “The Si3 has received quite a few compliments from artists who have used the system and they’re impressed with how easy it is to mix on the console right from the start,” Farber noted. “The Si3 sounds great, the built-in effects eliminate the need for outboard equipment, and the number of inputs and outputs you get compared to other consoles in the same price range is a huge advantage.”

A BSS Soundweb London BLU 160 signal processor is used as the main DSP frame at the Paramount Theatre, with a 4-in, 8-out configuration, controlled through HARMAN’s HiQnet System Architect™ program. “We ran two CAT5 cables from the BLU 160 to the amp rack located in the catwalk, where we installed a BSS BLU-BOB breakout box to get to the amplifier system,” Farber explained. “If one cable goes bad, the other one picks up immediately and the PA system continues. It made the installation very easy from a wiring standpoint.”

Panavid installed a new audio system featuring JBL loudspeakers at the Calvary Baptist Church in New York.

ORLANDO, Florida – Calvary Baptist Church was founded in New York City in 1847 as an independent Baptist church, and has been in its current location on Manhattan’s West 57th Street since 1931. Over the years, the church has undergone a series of renovations, and most recently completed a major upgrade to its audio system with the installation of HARMAN’s JBL VRX Series Constant Curvature, AE Series Compact and CBT loudspeakers.

Professional audio/video services company Panavid, Inc. of Pompton Plains, New Jersey was contracted to complete the rigging and speaker installation, led by Client Relations Manager Dennis Mitchell. The Calvary Baptist Church system is based around left/right arrays of five JBL

powered loudspeakers per side, and two VRX918S 18-inch subwoofers per side. Complementing the two main arrays are two JBL AC28/95 compact loudspeakers for front fill and eight JBL AC15 ultra-compact loudspeakers placed under the balcony. There are also two JBL CBT 100LA column speakers in the choir area. Walter Loehr of Panavid did the system tuning and configuration.

“Calvary Baptist Church reached the point where they needed to have professional audio for their sermons and all their events, up to and including concerts,” explained Mitchell. “The church has an exceptional choir and music ministry, led by Colin Fowler, and music is an integral part of the services.”

Mitchell noted, “The system was very much designed as a collaborative effort after numerous conversations with myself, Michael Toombs and Miq Munoz of the Calvary Baptist Church, and Jim Peters of rep firm Sigmet Corporation. Panavid recommended using JBL VRX932LAP loudspeakers with matching VRX918S subwoofers because they are some of the best sounding speakers available; we’ve been amazed at their sound quality.”

Calvary Baptist Audio Engineer, Miq Munoz, said, “The new JBL system punches right through to the back of the room. I used to describe our sanctuary as ‘muddy.’ Not anymore. And low frequency support from the subwoofers is powerful and tight.”

“We also needed speakers that were as unobtrusive as possible, while being able to deliver the large-scale sound quality we needed, and the form factors of the VRX932LAP and VRX918S allow us to do that,” Munoz added. “We used the AC28/95 and AC15 speakers where space considerations precluded the use of larger speakers. We also chose AKG HM1000 hanging microphones to mic the choir with exceptional results.”

“Before the system was even tweaked, we were excited about the quality of the sound the JBL’s were providing to the listening space,” Mitchell continued. “After Walter Loehr used his software, mics and ears to fine-tune the system to the church sanctuary, the sound became even more outstanding. The church is very happy with their decision to install this system and I am thrilled to see their excitement.”

VIcom Corporation and JBL Loudspeakers Help The Navy SEAL Heritage Center Open In Style

Virginia Integrated Communications (VIcom), a leading systems integration corporation based in Virginia Beach, installed an expansive system of JBL loudspeakers in the newly constructed UDT-SEAL Association’s SEAL Heritage Center on the Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Norfolk, Virginia. The Center, which was financed through donations to the UDT-SEAL Association, is designed to honor those who have served in the elite naval organization with memorials and educational facilities, while serving as a retreat for soldiers and their families before, during and after deployments.

VIcom was tasked with installing a flexible and high-quality sound system in several rooms that would cater to multiple scenarios, ranging from movies to presentations and guest speakers. “We wanted to ensure everyone in the room would be able to sit down, relax and enjoy any event going on in the area,” said Avery Prindall, Manager of Audio/Visual Engineering, VIcom.  “The JBL products work extremely well and people like them. The quality of the system allows us to install once and not worry about coming back to make any major changes.”

VIcom installed three arrays of three JBL VRX928LA loudspeakers each, as well as four JBL Control 30 surface-mount speakers and two JBL VRX915S subwoofers in the auditorium, along with BSS BLU-160 and BLU-120 processors and Crown DSI 2000 and DSI 4000 amplifiers. The system was configured with Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™. Additionally, VIcom installed JBL Control 26CT 2-way ceiling speakers in the conference room and JBL Control 28WH 2-way surface speakers in the activity room, with additional Crown 280A and DSI1000 amplifiers powering each room, respectively.

The UDT-SEAL Association’s new home includes a wide variety of room shapes and sizes, challenging Prindall to balance the sound equally throughout the 18,000-square-foot building. The VIcom team installed the JBL equipment to provide the ultimate sound experience, providing a strong support and entertainment center for those who protect the United States.

“JBL is a well-established name with a good reputation, so it was easy to choose the Control line for this installation,” stated Prindall. “We had good faith that this system would turn out well.  It was one of those installations that you turn on and immediately enjoy.”
